“Get your hands off me.” Kate clawed at the blindfold covering her eyes and lashed out with her right leg. Stay calm. Think. Where was Salif?

“Ne bouge pas.” The wrench to her injured arm sent agonising tingles from her shoulder to her fingers. Lesson learned, Kate didn’t resist the next time her attacker dragged her wrists behind her back and insisted she didn’t move.

In hindsight it was stupid leaving the café alone, right now, she couldn’t get lost in what should have been if she hoped to escape this mess. She sucked in a shaky breath, focussed on her surroundings, searching for any clue to where they were taking her.

The smell of petrol flooded her nostrils, strong enough she could taste it. The screech of wheels and frequent bumps clues to how fast they were driving over uneven terrain. For some reason, she was positive they’d double-backed and were on their way to Dori.

Luke would figure it out. He would find her. Kate shrugged, angry with herself for giving in to the temptation, the fantasy that anyone would care enough to come for her.

Suddenly, the van stopped, throwing her forward. The tight grip on her wrists returned. “Please, where are you taking me? What do you want?”

“Tais-toi, Putain, or my young friend will end your life. No more questions.”

“Salif. Help me.”

“I tell you this happen. This is your fault.” Salif’s voice shook with fear and anger.

Leaving her wrists tied, the man grabbed her hair and ripped away the rag covering her eyes. Blinded by the sudden flash of light and not wanting to be dragged in the dirt, Kate struggled to keep her feet underneath her as he kicked her forward.

“Ouvre la porte,” he growled at Salif.

The door creaked as it scraped along the ground. The squawk of wild chickens rang in Kate’s ears.

“Allez. Get in.” One last kick sent her crashing to the grimy floor.

It was pitch black. The stench of animal manure filled Kate’s nostrils. Bill lodged in the back of her throat, and she gagged. Terrified the driver might come back, she sat quietly, concentrated on her breathing, and blocked out everything but the good things. Tender hands, soft touches, Luke’s constant concern.

She ducked instinctively at the rustle to her right and scrambled to a sitting position. Fists balled tight she would fight anyone who tried to hit her again.

“Miss Kate, c’est moi, Amina.”

She’d never been more thankful to hear anyone’s voice in her life. “Are you okay?”

“Oui. Wait. I untie you.”

“Yes, yes, hurry.”

Amina crawled out of the darkness and released her wrists. A deep ache throbbed through both her arms, but nothing felt wet or sticky. Hopefully, her stitches were intact. “Where are we?”

“Yacouba’s barn.”

Slowly, Kate’s eyes adjusted to the slithers of light creasing the walls of the outbuilding. She shivered, she was right, they’d returned to Dori. “Who else is here?”

“I don’t know. I see only my brother and my mister. Yacouba. I think he is waiting for Seckou.”

“Did he hurt you?” Caught up in her problems she had selfishly forgotten to check Amina.
